Nipper
English dog depicted on record labels
The title of this article is ambiguous. For other meanings, see Nipper (disambiguation).
Nipper (born 1884 in Bristol; died September 1895 in Kingston upon Thames, England) was the dog depicted on the labels of various record companies, seemingly listening intently into a gramophone horn. Nipper owed his name (meaning "pincher" or "tweezers") to his habit of nipping at the calves of visitors to the house and passersby.
Nipper listening to his master's voice; reworked version of Barraud's painting

Very little is known about Nipper's origins. His first owner, Mark Barraud, likely found him on the street. It can be assumed that Nipper was a terrier mix. After Mark Barraud's death, his younger brother, the painter Francis Barraud, took him in. According to popular tradition, Francis's phonograph held a great fascination for the dog, and Nipper often sat in front of the horn listening to a record of Mark Barraud's voice.
E. M. Barraud, the painter's niece, disputed this account. In an article republished in 1973 by the press office of EMI Electrola GmbH, the trademark holder of the logo, to mark the 75th anniversary of "His Master's Voice," she wrote that "it is not true, as has often been claimed, that he listened to a record of his master's voice, because Mark Barraud never made a recording."[1] Rather, he often sat in this position by the door, as if hoping to see his former master.
Francis Barraud painted the dog in its favorite pose, initially adding a cylinder phonograph and offering the painting to the Edison-Bell Consolidated Phonograph Company Ltd. in London, which, however, showed no interest. On the advice of a friend, Francis then painted over the phonograph with a record player belonging to the newly founded Gramophone Company in Hayes, England. It is certain that the company bought the painting, including the copyright, from him in 1899 for a total of 100 pounds to use in its newspaper advertisements. The original now hangs in the boardroom of EMI in Hayes; the painted-over area is said to be clearly visible.

The detail on this bear is breathtaking. He looks so realistic! He's beautifully made with gorgeous faux fur, lovely and sturdy and can take lots of different poses. His paws are lifelike! Irina has really captured a real bear! His face is full of expression. Just incredible work and I am at a loss for enough words to praise this wonderful bear, Baribal!
Rocky is a very cute little guy. Irina does beautiful work. Rocky is well loved. He is a friend to a traveling bear named Masha and is part of the story told to preschool age children. He always gets hugs at the end of the story. He is a class favorite. He is nicely made.
